Hello, World!
“Hello, world!” is a computer program that displays the message “Hello, world!” Such a program is very simple in most programming languages. It is often used as a sanity check for a development environment causing it to be the first program written by people learning to ‘speak’ a new programming language.
This project aims to hint at the many layers of abstraction required to accomplish this seemingly simple task of displaying “Hello, world!” I will be creating an ASCII representation of this by using binary code to form a multi-layered texture map for the letterforms. The use of 3D printing will allow the information to be moved from a 2D space into a 3D arena. Giving it form and bringing it off the screen also gives that initial communication between programmer and machine a visual representation of these layers of abstraction.
This is a sculptural piece that hangs in an educational environment outside of a Maker Space and computer classroom for students, faculty, staff and guests at the Arkansas School for Math, Science, + Art in Hot Springs, AR.
